Joy Ike's music is an indie-infused mix of pop, jazz, and neo-soul, and has often been compared to the likes of Fiona Apple, Corrinne Bailey Rae, and Norah Jones. The Pittsburgh-grown, Nigerian singer/songwriter has only been writing and performing for 5 years but in that short amount of time has garnered much success in the independent music scene and has been voted “Best Solo Artist” by the Pittsburgh City Paper for the last three years. Joy Ike has had the privilege of opening for a handful of national recording acts including Kirsten Price, Serena Ryder, Tyrone Wells, and Dwele. She has worked with several established organizations such as The Pittsburgh Public Theater, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, WYEP, The Carnegie International Museum, and The August Wilson Center among a few. On a chill fall evening after the Soul Garden, Raheem stopped at the after party held at the Shadow Lounge. Before the SL held an alcohol license they sold candy bars in which Raheem purchased for a table of young ladies. Shortly after, that SMI (co-owner of the SL) connected us with Raheem. He began recording at 2:15am and did not finish until 9:30am that morning. The song with the lyrics, “I got a thing for chocolates...I got a thing for sweets” was inspired by his experience at the Shadow Lounge and is featured on his first album.

Slum Village

In the summer of 2007 an outstanding drummer by the name of Daru Jones (who linked up with a brother name “Ab” ) caught the attention Slum Village who was in need of a drummer for several show across the country. Slum Village traveled all the way to the Shadow Lounge to practice with Daru and Ab. After the rehearsal Slum Village headed upstairs to Ya Momz House to record “Fight the Feeling”.

Sean Jones

For as long as we’ve been in existence we never had to pleasure of working with the legendary trumpeter Sean Jones until YMH’s was contracted to produce the soundtrack for FLY BOYS: Western Pennsylvania’s Tuskegee Airmen. After 3 rigorous days of recording, mixing and mastering we turned in the soundtrack in at 8:30am Monday morning to the Pittsburgh PBS head quarters. Little did we all know, 8 mouths later this soundtrack would win an Emmy Award for music composition & arrangement. 2008 was a great year.
